ROYAL CARIBBEAN UNVEILS GENESIS CENTRAL PARK CONCEPT

In its latest evolution in cruise ship design, Royal Caribbean International's Project Genesis will bring the best of the land to sea with Central Park, a revolutionary design in which the center of the ship opens to the sky and features lush, tropical grounds spanning the length of a football field. An exquisite public gathering place featuring serene pathways, seasonal flower gardens and canopy trees, Central Park will provide cruisers with more choices in a unique outdoor space. One of the ship's most ground-breaking spaces, this new concept is the first of seven neighborhoods to be unveiled on Project Genesis. Each neighborhood will provide vacationers with the opportunity to seek out relevant experiences in various locales based on their personal style, preference or mood. CUNARD QUEENS RENDEZVOUS IN SOUTHAMPTON FOR FIRST AND LAST TIME

In yet another historic Cunard occasion, the Line's three Queens - Queen Mary 2, QE2 and Queen Victoria - met April 22nd in their homeport of Southampton for the first and last time. QE2 and Queen Victoria arrived after completing milestone World Cruises: the final such voyage for the iconic QE2, set to leave Cunard's service in November, and the first World Cruise for Queen Victoria. Queen Mary 2 arrived after concluding her first Transatlantic Crossing of the season and will transport the remaining World Cruisers from both QE2 and Queen Victoria back to New York, arriving April 28. Cruise Business Review UK correspondent Kari Reinikainen was witnessing the event from the Queen Victoria, while waiting for a departure of 10-night sailing.

AWAITING THE SOLSTICE

When the Celebrity Solstice enters service in December this year, several ”wows” will be heard on the way. Celebrity Cruises, part of Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd, is a well known using a ”wow” factor as its marketing gimmick, and the brand-new Solstice-class will not be an exception. It will introduce the first ever outdoor deck area to feature real, cultivated grass, which even require a full-time groundskeeper. This is one of the many innovations of the 122,000-ton, 2,850-passenger Celebrity Solstice, one of two major prototypes entering service this year.

YEAR 2007 – WE SAW ALL OF THEM

As the year 2007 has now ended, and while we are looking forward to reporting on cruise industry developments in 2008, it’s important to take one last look at 2007. The year marked the debut of nine new cruise ship deliveries, which brought almost 22,000 new fresh lower berths into the industry. Cruise Business Review staff members had a chance to visit all of the new ships, including the smallest FRAM, the largest LIBERTY OF THE SEAS, the most contemporary NORWEGIAN GEM, the most traditional QUEEN VICTORIA [pictured during the christening on December 10, 2007], the most exciting new platform AIDAdiva, and so on. All reviews can be found in our 1/2007, 2/2007 and 3/2007 issues, respectively.

CHIC AND HIP

It’s not difficult to consider who has been more chic and hip, than Norwegian Cruise Line. The Miami-based cruise line has replenished nearly all of the fleet its current leadership inherited when Star Cruises bought the line in 2000 and, as well, has become a leader in offering an atmosphere, via its Freestyle cruising concept, that’s younger and more playful than ever before. With a fresh $1 billion investment in its pockets as a result of Apollo Management’s recent investment into the line, NCL has also embarked in new Freestyle 2.0 initiative to further improve its customer service.
