Viking marks float out of new Egypt ship

Viking announced yesterday its newest ship for the Nile River—the 82-guest Viking Aton—was floated out, marking a major construction milestone and the first time the ship has touched water. Set to debut in August 2023, the Viking Aton will join the company’s growing fleet of state-of-the-art ships purpose-built for the Nile River and sail Viking’s bestselling 12-day Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary. Viking has seen very strong demand in Egypt, with the 2023 season now sold out and many 2024 sailing dates already sold out. The surge in demand has led Viking to open 2025 sailing dates sooner than originally expected.

“We are pleased with the continued strong interest for our Nile River voyages. Our guests are curious explorers, and Egypt remains a destination of great interest for its many cultural treasures,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking. “We are proud to be the only western company to build, own and operate ships on the Nile, and with the float out of the Viking Aton, we look forward to welcoming more guests to experience this fantastic region.”

The traditional float out ceremony took place at Massara shipyard in Cairo on Tuesday, April 4, 2023, and is significant because it denotes a ship moving into its final stage of construction. The float out of Viking Aton began at approximately 1:00 p.m. local time when Viking Chairman Torstein Hagen and Sayed Farouk, Chairman of The Arab Contractors (Osman Ahmed Osman & Co.), together pressed the button that signaled to lower the ship-lift of the yard. She will now be moved to a nearby outfitting dock for final construction and interior build-out.

The Viking Aton & Viking’s growing Egypt fleet

Hosting 82 guests in 41 staterooms, the new, state-of-the-art Viking Aton is inspired by Viking’s award-winning river and ocean ships with the elegant Scandinavian design for which Viking is known. The identical sister ship to the Viking Osiris, which was named in 2022 by Viking’s first ceremonial godfather, the 8th Earl of Carnarvon, the Viking Aton features several aspects familiar to Viking guests, such as a distinctive square bow and an indoor/outdoor Aquavit Terrace. In addition to the Viking Osiris, the Viking Aton will join the Viking Ra, which launched in 2018. In response to strong demand, Viking will have six ships sailing the Nile by 2025 with the addition of two new sister ships, the Viking Hathor and the Viking Sobek, which are already under construction and will be delivered in 2024 and 2025, respectively.

Viking’s Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary

During the 12-day, Pharaohs & Pyramids itinerary, guests begin with a three-night stay at a first-class hotel in Cairo, where they can visit iconic sites such as the Great Pyramids of Giza, the necropolis of Sakkara, the Mosque of Muhammad Ali, or the Grand Egyptian Museum. Guests then fly to Luxor, where they visit the Temples of Luxor and Karnak before boarding a Viking river ship for an eight-day roundtrip cruise on the Nile River, featuring Privileged Access to the tomb of Nefertari in the Valley of the Queens and the tomb of Tutankhamen in the Valley of the Kings, and excursions to the Temple of Khnum in Esna, the Dendera Temple complex in Qena, the temples at Abu Simbel and the High Dam in Aswan, and a visit to a colorful Nubian village, where guests can experience a traditional elementary school. Finally, the journey concludes with a flight back to Cairo for a final night in the ancient city.

For guests looking to extend their journey, Viking also offers Pre and Post Extensions that provide Privileged Access to archives and exhibits. Guests on the five-day British Collections of Ancient Egypt extension will begin the journey in London, where they will meet their Viking Tour Director, an expert Egyptologist, and experience Privileged Access to two museums: first a private, early morning visit to the Egyptian Collection at the British Museum before it opens to the general public – and then a visit to the home and personal museum of world-renowned architect, Sir John Soane, where the tour will be illuminated by candlelight, a re-enactment of how Soane entertained guests and showcased his exquisite collection of Egyptian antiquities, including a 3,000-year-old Egyptian sarcophagus. Guests will also visit London’s Petrie Museum, which houses more than 80,000 artifacts from ancient Egypt and Sudan. In Oxford, guests will visit the Ashmolean Museum, one of the oldest in the world, and home to a varied collection of Egyptian mummies and art – and go behind the scenes at Oxford University’s Griffith Institute, where they will enjoy a Privileged Access visit to see Howard Carter’s archives, which detail the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb. Lastly, guests will have further Privileged Access with an exclusive visit to Highclere Castle to view the Earl’s magnificent private collection of Egyptian artifacts, as well as archives and exhibits not normally accessible to the public.

Additional offerings include a Pre Extension in Jerusalem where guests will explore the ancient history and vibrant culture of Israel’s fascinating capital and a Post Extension to Jordan – Petra, Dead Sea & Amman to view Roman antiquities at Jerash, Crusader-era castles at Kerak or Shobak and experience the lost city of Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Tallink Grupp charters out another cruise ferry

Tallink Grupp late last week signed a contract with Canadian enterprise Bridgemans Floatel LP/Bridgemans Services Group LP for a multi-year charter of the company’s vessel Isabelle, with a purchase option. The agreement is for a bareboat charter, meaning the vessel will be chartered out without Tallink Grupp’s crew.

The Latvian-flagged Isabelle, formerly operating on the company’s Riga-Stockholm route before the Covid pandemic, and currently housing Ukrainian refugees in Tallinn since April 2022 as part of a charter agreement with the Estonian government, will be chartered to Bridgemans from 1 July 2023.

Commenting on the new charter agreement, Tallink Grupp’s CEO Paavo Nõgene said: “We are very pleased to have reached this new agreement for our vessel Isabelle – a deal that will no doubt have a positive impact on our bottom line.Tallink has historically had many successful charter projects with many of its vessels providing either temporary accommodation or transport in Australia, Canada, Morocco, to name but a few. In recent years the chartering of our vessels has provided us a good alternative revenue stream and a vital buffer during challenging travel restriction times. Our ships and crew have proved themselves to be invaluable partners at global summits as well as in the relief effort of the war in Ukraine.

"It has become clear over the last few years, that the chartering of our vessels has been and will continue to be an important part of our business model going forward. And there are many reasons why the chartering of vessels with long-term contracts makes good business sense for us and mostly it is a combination of the continuing economic uncertainties, low consumer confidence and the significant pressure of increasing costs, such as the pay increases resulting from the recently signed new collective agreement, the slower than expected recovery of the passenger numbers and reduced demand.”

Isabelle is expected to stay in Tallinn for refurbishment before departing for Canada later this year.

Tallink Grupp’s current agreement with the Estonian Social Insurance Board ends in June 2023. There are currently approximately 900 Ukrainian refugees still living on board the vessel. The Estonian authorities have alternative accommodation plans in place for the refugees after the termination of the contract with Tallink Grupp.

Seatrade Cruise hosts its inaugural F&B@Sea event with plans to return in 2024

Seatrade Cruise, the industry’s leading platform for collaborating, innovating and connecting, held its inaugural edition of F&B@Sea, 28-29 March at Port Everglades’ Terminal 2. Inspired by extensive research by the Seatrade Cruise team and the growth of the global food and beverage market, F&B@Sea brought together cruise line executives, suppliers and vendors to meet, learn and discuss challenges, opportunities and expand horizons.

Throughout the event, industry leaders from Virgin Voyages, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Celebrity Cruises and more, took to the stage addressing emerging topics and trends in the sector, including ever-changing supply chains, delivering unique passenger experiences and the demand for sustainable dining.

Top food and beverage trends identified to heavily influence shipboard dining in 2023/2024 include local gastronomy offerings reflective of cruise itineraries, options for sourcing sustainable seafood, demand from consumers for low to no-alcohol beverages, as well as interest in craft-spirit infusions and health supplement drinks. Technology is also predicted to play a major role with continued focus on convenience provided by ordering/menu apps, and AI for predictive ordering and waste management.

“For us, it’s really about changing people’s perception of what food and beverage at sea is really about,” says Cornelius Gallagher Jr., Vice President, Food & Beverage Operations, Celebrity Cruises. “I think that there is a preconceived notion that the cruise industry and the food onboard is all about volume and I think a big part of what we all do here is really try to change people’s perception and to try and educate and expose them to what can be.”

A highly curated line up of vendors and sponsors including Heineken, Campari Group, Diageo, Pernod Ricard and Rémy Cointreau, joined the marketplace alongside live cooking and cocktail demonstrations. Special features and attendee favorites included the Bacardi Speakeasy, Stella’s chalice engraving station and the Sundown Soirée networking reception.

“I think it (F&B@Sea) was a good opportunity to meet a lot of suppliers and potential partners,” says Paolo Raia, Managing Director of Procurement and Logistics at MSC Cruises. “I think that it’s something that can grow in the upcoming years, is full of opportunities – but for sure something that can help the cruise industry do it all.”

The event’s list of attendees included cruise line and food and beverage decision makers such as purchasing and sourcing managers, supply chain directors and managers, restaurant managers and executives of food and beverage sales.

With the conclusion of a successful inaugural event, F&B@Sea will return bigger and better.

F&B@Sea was developed in close consultation with cruise lines, food and beverage stakeholders, and culinary leaders with support from Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) and industry consulting leader MarkeTeam.

Holland America Line outlines its 150th anniversary celebrations

From a ceremony at an historic landmark with a special gift to shipboard gala celebrations and a toast around the world, Holland America Line is getting ready to celebrate a day 150 years in the making. The premium cruise line’s sesquicentennial birthday is April 18, 2023, and on that date, Rotterdam VII will arrive at its namesake city of Rotterdam, the Netherlands, to revel with local dignitaries, port officials and guests. Zuiderdam will be at Amsterdam, the Netherlands, that day and host an evening gala party on board for Grand World Voyage guests.

Holland America Line President Gus Antorcha will lead the celebrations. Also scheduled to attend the events are Her Royal Highness Princess Margriet of the Netherlands, Rotterdam’s godmother; Ahmed Aboutaleb, mayor of Rotterdam; and descendants from two families of Holland America Line’s original founders.

“Holland America Line is a company that takes deep pride in our heritage and respects the role we played in history, so our 150th anniversary events honor our tradition while recognizing the brand we are today,” said Antorcha. “All of the festivities we have planned carry special meaning, and we’re excited to celebrate with so many individuals who have been a part of our story throughout the years, alongside our guests, team members and the people of the Netherlands.”

Upon Rotterdam’s arrival at Rotterdam April 18, the 150th Anniversary celebrations begin at Hotel New York, home to Holland America Line’s historic headquarters. The cruise line will present a commemorative 150th Anniversary bell — in the style of a traditional ship bell — to be permanently displayed at the hotel. At the event, Princess Margriet will follow Holland America Line’s ritual of blessing the bell before it is donated to Hotel New York.

In addition, an original share of the first Holland America Line stock shares will be presented to be kept as part of a special collection in the city of Rotterdam archives. At the ceremony, PostNL, the postal office of the Netherlands, also will unveil a 24-carat collectable 150th anniversary gold-foil stamp to commemorate the special milestone. Available for purchase throughout the Netherlands, only a limited edition of just 1,000 will be produced.

Following a Gala Dinner on board Rotterdam and Zuiderdam, the celebrations move to the Lido pool area with live music and a toast to the special day. Anniversary-themed parties also will be held on the nine other ships in Holland America Line’s fleet.
