Viking Line, the Finnish cruise-ferry company, will place an order this coming summer for two 60,000 gross ton cruise-ferries for its Turku-Stockholm service, according to Managing Director Mikael Backman. Yards from Norway, Germany, Italy, South Korea, Croatia and Finland are competing for the contract to build the vessels, which will be more than 200 meters in length and will introduce a new service concept for passengers, he said in a media interview.
Nils-Erik Eklund, who recently retired from the post of Managing Director at the company, told Cruise Business that the next generation of ships the company builds will have to take into account expected new environmental rules that will be much tighter than the ones now in force. In addition, passengers also expect ferry companies to do more to protect the environment.
The passenger service concept will be reworked completely and will steer away from the current focus on wining and dining and instead will provide a more cruise-like experience with, for example, a spa onboard. Wartsila, the Finnish engineering group, has a design for a new-generation Baltic cruise-ferry that includes the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel. In addition, the ship has Flettner rotors that use wind for propulsion power. The retail and dining concepts plus passenger flow also have been completely reworked in the concept design.
Currently the newest ship in Viking Line fleet is Viking XPRS, pictured here on the right (Photo credit: Kenny Leong). You can read more about this in the latest issue of Cruise Business Review magazine. |

When she debuts in winter 2011, Oceania Cruises' new Marina will be the first ship to offer luxury suites completely appointed from furniture and fabrics to lighting and bedding using the acclaimed Ralph Lauren Home collection. To accomplish this industry first, the cruise line tapped New York-based Tocar Interior Design because of the award-winning partners' keen familiarity with the Polo Ralph Lauren esthetic. Susan Bednar Long, co-founder and president, previously oversaw the decoration of flagship retail stores for Polo across North America. Christina Sullivan, co-founder and vice president, began her career at Polo in the store design department, where she launched Double RL Collection Shops across the U.S. "To appeal to discerning travelers we wanted the best suites on Marina to feel like a luxurious estate home. We thought out-of-the box, insisted on the finest craftsmanship and sought out the most talented residential designers," stated Bob Binder, Oceania Cruises' president. "Tocar has designed the first suites at sea exclusively using furnishings from Ralph Lauren Home."

Hot on the heels of the Costa Deliziosa, AIDAblu and MSC Magnifica, P&O Cruises – part of Carnival Corporation & plc – has taken delivery of the 116,000 gross ton Azura from Fincantieri's Monfalcone shipyard. The Azura, a modified sister to Princess Cruises Crown-class vessels, is the largest cruise ship dedicated to the UK market along with its fleetmate the Ventura.
Since 1990, the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri has constructed 53 cruise ships, 49 of which have been delivered to Carnival Corp. brands. Another ten ships are scheduled for delivery from Fincantieri between now and 2012.
