Pride of America charms her first guests
Norwegian Cruise Line took delivery the Pride of America - one of the longest new cruise ship projects ever - in early June, 2005. The new ship has really kept its promise: Being an 'on-off' project, its American themed decor is tastefully executed and the ship is really interesting to navigate through.
Originally known as 'Project America' the newbuilding was ordered by American Classic Voyages, which went out of the business in fall 2001. The hull of Pride of America was built at the Ingalls shipyard in the U.S., but the ship was completed at Lloyd Werft, Bremerhaven, Germany. The completion was delayed almost a year, as the ship became partially submerged
during a storm in January, 2004.
Pride of America measures 81,000 gross tons and carries 2,138 passengers (double occupancy). It is the second of three planned ships in the NCL America fleet, and sails under the U.S. flag with a 100-percent U.S. crew. NCL America started operation last summer with Pride of Aloha and will add a third vessel, the 93,000 gross ton Pride of Hawaii to its fleet
next year.
