Showcasing onboard experiences all her own, Royal Caribbean International's Allure of the Seas, the world's next largest and most innovative cruise ship debuting in December 2010, will introduce new culinary concepts and tempting twists to signature Oasis-class restaurants. A Brazilian steakhouse will be a destination restaurant that comes to life for dinner service in the Solarium, featuring authentic Brazilian-style meats and seafood dishes, from Picanha cut sirloin steak to Atlantic salmon marinated with sea salt and garlic, served table-side and sliced straight off the skewer. In Central Park, recently anointed Chef de Cuisine Molly Brandt will present guests with a one-of-a-kind menu and distinct dining experience at Allure of the Seas 150 Central Park, a signature fine dining experience.
"As churrascaria concept restaurants gain popularity on land, Royal Caribbean is taking advantage of having a new ship to introduce a Brazilian steakhouse and bring a new dynamic and colorful nightlife ambiance for adults in the Solarium," says Lisa Bauer, Senior Vice President, Hotel Operations, Royal Caribbean International. Guests onboard Allure of the Seas will have a new arrangement of dining experiences throughout the ship, from the Allegio Main Dining Room to new venues on the Boardwalk and Royal Promenade.
Combining the best of classic Mexican beach bars and Southern California's famed taquerias, Rita's Cantina will be a vibrant new restaurant in the Boardwalk neighborhood. Adults and kids alike will enjoy some of their favorite Mexican fare, such as shrimp ceviche tostadas, warm tortilla chips with salsa and fiesta guacamole, as well as entrées, such as fajitas, fish tacos and Chipotle-style flautas. The more casual setting will be a favorite lunch, snack or dinner spot for guests seeking a flavorful fiesta onboard Allure of the Seas. Rita's Cantina also will boast some of the best and widest selection of margaritas at sea, offering both authentic and signature concoctions mixed with a choice from the extensive list of quality tequilas, served on the rocks or frozen in a variety of fruit-flavor combinations. In addition, the restaurant will introduce new nightlife to Boardwalk with live guitar music, drinks and dancing. Rita Cantina's design will include large open breezeways and an outdoor seating area complete with high top tables and stools, and will be located in place of Seafood Shack onboard sister-ship Oasis of the Seas.
Also new to Boardwalks dynamic and engaging scene will be The Boardwalk Dog House, an outdoor hot-dog specialty counter located where The Donut Shop is on Oasis of the Seas. Guests can choose from traditional hot dogs, wieners, brats, sausages and other delicious linked meats and a variety of toppings to split a long bun. The Donut Shop will remain on Boardwalk in a new location next to the Ice Cream Parlor.

ZOLL Medical Corporation, a manufacturer of resuscitation devices and related software solutions, has announced that a guest vacationing aboard Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines Ltd. vessel Oasis of the Seas was saved with the help of a ZOLL AED Plus. It was the first time the unit was used aboard the 5,400-passenger megaship, the largest passenger liner in the world.
"The value Royal Caribbean places on passenger safety is commendable. By strategically placing AEDs throughout their entire fleet, Royal Caribbean realizes the value these life-saving devices can play in improving outcomes from sudden cardiac arrest when every second counts."
According to Steve Williams, RN, CEN, CFRN, Director of Medical Operations for Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., a guest collapsed on March 27 in the ship’s buffet area. "Fortunately a passing guest who is a physician witnessed the cardiac arrest, called for an AED, and started CPR," he said. "A crew member brought the AED Plus, which the physician used to deliver a shock that converted the patient. The ship’s medical team arrived and took over patient care. A subsequent shock was delivered. The revived patient was transferred to a local hospital, underwent a stent procedure, and is now at home recovering."
"The value Royal Caribbean places on passenger safety is commendable. By strategically placing AEDs throughout their entire fleet, Royal Caribbean realizes the value these life-saving devices can play in improving outcomes from sudden cardiac arrest when every second counts," said Jonathan A. Rennert, President of ZOLL.
Over the past 24 months, Royal Caribbean has taken a pro-active approach and standardized on ZOLL resuscitation products throughout its entire 27-ship fleet. Ten AED Plus units are strategically placed aboard the Oasis of the Seas. In addition, ZOLL M Series® ALS defibrillators are in Royal Caribbean’s onboard infirmaries and each ship’s first response teams are outfitted with AED Pros.
Cruise Control from Kongsberg Maritime aboard Oasis of the Seas

Royal Caribbean International's (RCI) groundbreaking mega cruise vessel – Oasis of the Seas – enters 2010 with critical navigation, maneuvering and automation functions under the proven and trusted command of Kongsberg Maritime control systems. The extensive design and installation project, which is a realisation of Kongsberg Maritime's The Full Picture ethos was undertaken in close collaboration with RCI at the STX yard in Turku, Finland.
Complete Cruise Control is the driving concept behind the Kongsberg Maritime installation aboard the world's largest cruise vessel, which at its heart features a complex bridge control system. With six Wartsila diesel electric engines delivering close to 100MW of power to four large 5MW bow thrusters and three 20MW azipods supplied by ABB Marine, Oasis has a unique and powerful propulsion system. The challenge of controlling all of that power from the bridge, in order to safely and efficiently move the 65 meters tall, 360 meters long, 47 meters wide, 225,282 GRT Oasis fell to Kongsberg Maritime, when it was contracted to supply the propulsion control system and dynamic positioning (DP2), in addition to power management, machinery automation and HVAC automation systems.
With such a complex scope of supply, it was vital that Kongsberg Maritime's designers and engineers worked closely with RCI, throughout every stage of the project. "Over the past decade, shipyards have embraced an outsourcing production model. In addition, the increased size and complexity of the vessels we build demands close cooperation, so we tend to work with companies such as Kongsberg Maritime who share our values and business culture," said Anders Aasen, RCI's Associate Vice President, Marine Technical Services.
Captain Bill Wright, Senior Vice President of RCI, and Captain of Oasis of the Seas believes that many different components came together to make the system meet RCI's requirements for such a large vessel: "Oasis has about 15,000 square meters of sail area, so manoeuvring the vessel in and out of small or busy ports in challenging wind and sea conditions requires a powerful and dynamic propulsion control system. We worked closely with Kongsberg Maritime to ensure we got the right bridge control system and functionalities in the software solution to match our needs."
Captain Wright's influence also extended to fine tuning the KONGSBERG DP system by suggesting some software refinements to ensure the redundant DP system was optimised for the Oasis. "There were some functions we didn't need and others we wanted, and with KONGSBERG's help, we ended up with a system which meets our requirements. In fact, there are elements to the DP system aboard the Oasis which I am confident would be of interest to the offshore industry."
According to Rolf Taxt, Kongsberg Maritime's Project Manager (Integrated Control Systems), the company places a high value on the input delivered by RCI personnel. "Oasis is among the largest, most challenging projects we've ever worked on, and it is a credit to RCI's personnel and the yard that everything has gone smoothly. In addition to customising the DP software and bridge control systems, RCI wanted wide-screen monitors, which allows us to make available more information on screen for bridge officers. Following this, we are now able to offer the same widescreen solution to other customers."
The collaboration between Kongsberg Maritime and RCI continues apace as Oasis of the Seas enters 2010; with the installation of a similar Cruise Control system aboard her sister ship, Allure of the Seas, which is due to sail in November 2010 after completion at the STX yard in Turku.

The 1,500 sofas in the passenger cabins of the Oasis of the Seas, which has 2,704 cabins in 22 different categories, are upholstered with petrol green and brown woven fabrics from Baumann Dekor of Austria, and represent the latest contribution by the family-owned firm to cruise-ship interior design.
Wolfgang List, Vice President of Marketing, Distribution and Design for Baumann Dekor, says, "In 2010, we will form strategic alliances with strong partners in the interior-design field. Together, we will create interesting service packages and offer holistic interior-design concepts. The luxury markets of the future are redefining themselves and that affects design concepts for hotels and cruise ships. Hotel guests look for individual flair, a special experience, differentiation, emotionality and make their own decisions regarding which object they prefer. We want our design concept to be recognizable and enrich any stay in these rooms with authentic quality of life."
The family business from Austria has a solid base due to its versatile involvement in industry, trade, hotels, ships, caravans and air travel. Comprehensive production facilities include weaving, printing, dyeing and finishing, and a broad selection of more than 52,000 different fabric patterns is available. Baumann Dekor has made a name for itself with over 600 hotel and cruise-ship projects and built an excellent network with architects and designers.
Ismo Mäkinen, Managing Director of I.S. Mäkinen Oy, Finland and USA, who has collaborated on more than 500 cruise ship projects over the past 10 years, says, "Our company has been working very successfully with Baumann Dekor, Austria, for several years. We have fitted various furnishings, such as sofas, chairs, bedspreads and curtains, in more than 20,000 guest cabins with fabrics by this high-performance family business.
